First off I gotta say that All American Zombie Drugs was not at all what I was expecting. Okay. Ya. I was expecting a silly comedy al la the original American Pie movie, mixed with some real Zombie action! Well, I got the comedy but to be honest.... I felt a little scammed by the title. Why? There's not really any Zombies! Don't get me wrong, there are some cool Zombie sequences, and some good old fashioned scare scenes, but not presented in a way I was hoping. ( And yes, I try to keep these reviews spoiler free when I can. )
However, all that aside, what did I think of All American Zombie Drugs as a movie? I rather liked it, as I'm sure you can see from my rating. I just think the title is a little misleading.... and so is the box art.
At heart, this is a comedy with a sprinkling of Zombies. As a comedy this indie film works great for the most part. Right from the opening sequence I knew I would get a few chuckles out of this film. The story itself is nothing new, but set up and for the most part paced right. I say set up right because the overall gags in this film are done rather nicely and expertly written. The look of the film pretty damn nice as well. Anyone watching this will not think Indie. Hell, there's parts of this film that don't even look lower budget, rather they look like any higher budgeted film. How's this done? Simple. Good audio. Good camera work/lighting and some slick editing. All wrapped together with some rather impressive post work. And what adds even more to the package is the decent acting coming from the cast. Sure, there 'were' a few parts that screamed 'Cheesy'. And a few awkward moments, but overall the acting was done nicely. And the slight cheese factor actually fit in with the movies style.
Now, my gripes. I've already written that I wished for more "Zombie" moments. But aside from that I thought the movie started to drag a little. It started strong, got some good chuckles out of me.... and then.... it seemed to change pace. What started as a straight up comedy began to actually morph into an attempt at a drama. Then, back to comedy. This abrupt pace change hurt this film for me and reduced the score. I may have given it a perfect score if the pace kept up, and on track. However, this was a minor issue and didn't make me stop watching.
Overall, I thought All American Zombie Drugs was some pretty good indie entertainment, well worth a rent or even a purchase. So what are you waiting for? Visit their homepage and show your support today!
PS: As misleading as I wrote the title feels to me, by the end of the film it does make sense.
I humbly submit my score of 3.5 / 5.0 for All American Zombie Drugs.
