Checking out Independent productions is a real treat sometimes. Especially when I come across something like Out Of Time! This production takes a 'Double Attack' direction, the pilot episode "The Accidental Time Traveller" is not only the first episode of a planned series, but it also acts as a stand alone short film that will be hitting festivals soon. Very ambitious, and after watching the pilot.... well... my money's on this production doing very well.
As you may have guessed, this film's about time travel -a la Butterfly Effect style-. But don't mistake the nod to to the -Not so Independent- film. Out Of Time is fresh enough to stand on it's own two legs.
The Accidental Time Traveller revolves on the premise of changing the past, a great topic in any time. But don't be mistaken, it's a tough one.
Visually, this production is very cool, with some even cooler effects splashed in for color. But what's really 'Neat' is that the effects compliment the visual style of the production, they don't act like the "Look What I can do" attitude that seems to be over-running productions lately. They work. And what's even better is that the visual style compliments the story itself. It doesn't try to make up for a weak plot. Another rarity lately it seems.
As for the characters and acting itself... well... not bad guys/gals. Quite good actually. The lines don't come across as corny and you can really believe in the characters. Steve Kasan does a great job bouncing around here, there and everywhere (in time) and keeps it all on the up-and-up acting wise. Add to this a great supporting cast which all seem to be... well, good enough to be in leading roles themselves! What do you get? Well, you got Out Of Time!
Now, I love this kind of feature. I'm a time travel nut so I'm a little bias. I would score this a perfect score myself, but I can't do that because this type of story line is not for everyone. It's jumpy and you really have to pay attention or you'll be lost. Well, maybe not lost but mis-directed. The plot itself is universal. Love. Love lost.... get love back. But the train that drives the story can be a little complex. Luckily, when the acting and visuals are this good you really do pay attention. Still though, if you're not a time travel freak like me then you may be left scratching your head at times. But you'll still watch because the film is good enough to keep you entertained. I'm giving this production a dual rating. Can I do that? Hell ya.
