The truth is that "86'd" from writer, director Brady Nelson, could be a day in the life of near anyone - and that's just what this title is. A day in the life. There really is no traditional story being told here. More like a video diary, edited together, to showcase a days progression. Well... in this case many days - but I'm sure you get my point. Miles is your run of the mill young guy, trying to make a few bucks delivering pizza and promising himself it's just a temporary job. Through the course of the film, the viewers get to meet some of his co-workers, and another delivery person, who happens to magically end up delivering to the same addresses at the same time. I suppose it's a really small city right? The two decide briefly to rebel against their employers, very briefly, and by the end we're led to believe Miles has made a life decision. Although I'm not entirely sure of that, since it's never actually stated. "86'd" ends up being a fifteen minute ride down to crazy town. Although there's really not much of a story - that's alright. The film does have it's funny moments that more than make up for the loose story. I just wish there was more of a traditional narrative. All the pieces were in place, just never fleshed out and fully used.
So here's the thing. I'm not coming down on "86'd" for not having much of a story. Well, not that much anyway. The simple fact is lots of movies and shows don't have much of a story, and are hugely successful. Anyone remember that little show "Seinfeld" that was a hit? It's still airing - even today? I clearly didn't mind Brady Nelson's little trip into the world of the delivery driver... I gave it an average rating. A great accomplishment - considering the low budget, independent nature of this title. So what "does" this film have going for it? For starters... it's funny. More to the point? It's funny in a way many of us can relate with. The characters are real-ish and amusing, and equally surprising? It's actually shot and edited pretty damn nicely. All things considered. Maybe don't expect the next Spielberg competitor, but that doesn't mean there is nothing here to enjoy. If you happen to be looking for a quick fix of funny... "86's" may be just your cup of tea. No real time commitment and some gritty, down to earth entertainment. For that last statement alone, I'd have to say good job guys. Entertaining the viewer is half the battle. A solid two and a half stars.
