Spielberg? Not that Steven you F'ing idiot! Stephen with a "PH" - and with that I laughed out loud yet again. Just what the hell am I talking about? A line from a series. This series actually. "BOOMBATS" from creator Tony DeSantis. A comedy following Bobby Boombats, the slightly dim-witted hero of this little adventure. Bobby owes some cash to the mob and in an attempt to pay it back, and make a name for himself, he sets in motion plans to start his own business - doing any and all odd jobs. He's even making a commercial! Imagine that.
In true mob comedy fashion, Bobby is not alone. Coming for the ride is his Mother and Brother, and of course his daughter Gabrielle. The series opens with his situation being confirmed, as he attempts to finagle his way out of trouble - promising to work for a mob wife. From there this main plot point is kind of left on the back burner, as we get to know Bobby, his family, and his friends. His debt is always just on the edge of visual conversation, but we don't get a direct return to it until the end of episode three. That suited me just fine because honestly? Watching Bobby's daily interactions and life was a blast. No boring viewing here. Just getting to know some interesting characters through some comedic situations. The story itself is nothing terribly new. After the first few minutes of watching, you get a general idea of where things are going to go. Not the juicy details mind you, but a good feel for what's to come. And that was just fine with me as well. Using a familiar plot arc, to do your own thing, generally has one main advantage. You don't alienate your viewers right from the start - opening things up to complicate matters later on. "BOOMBATS" itself feels like a new glove with a passing resemblance to your old one. New but comfy. And in this case, funny as hell. Given the chance, Odd-Job Bob will get the work done - leaving you nothing to worry about but laughing. And laugh you will. I almost guarantee it. For anyone wondering about how "BOOMBATS" looks as it plays across your screen... worry not. DeSantis has made sure all things look, sound, and play the way they're meant to be played. It really does look great allowing us, the viewers, to simply sit back - relax and enjoy the show. Even the pacing feel near perfect - a tribute to the editor. It's always a pleasure watching a top shelf, low budget indie production. Especially when you see so many others that are simply OK... or not even. That's not meant as an insult to any series not quite as good as this one, only that this is a level to strive for. Both for new and old producers alike.
Another area this series excels is the acting itself. There's some dialog and situations that could have been a disaster - if the cast were not picked correctly. With "BOOMBATS" disaster was averted simply because of some great talent in front of the camera. The over-the-top aspects, and the incredibly cliche elements, feel natural and yes... even funny. If you find any aspect of this series offending, you simply don't have an ounce of humor within you. It's all very tongue in cheek - and it all works so very well. I laughed more times than I can count - because simply put... "BOOMBATS" hits all the right marks. So yes. This is a series I highly recommend and would love to keep watching myself. As always, social links are below and I know I'll be following and liking. Excellent job all around - a solid, totally earned, four stars. What more can be said? |
