The dreaded triangle of love. For some, such a situation could be looked back on and thought of as exciting - but for many, it can be a nightmare at the "time" it occurs. "Ecstasy Behind the Forgotten" is the story of one such triangle between two roommates and a woman, a girlfriend. What makes this film slightly different is that one of the roommates is gay and has developed feelings for their straight friend - but is he really wholly straight? He does have a "girlfriend," but sometimes, things are not so black and white. Emotions can easily get blurred. Friends, best friends, something more? This is a story of not only identity but also jealousy and anger - all packed within a ten-minute short film.
If one word could be used to describe Nora Stock's short film "Ecstasy Behind the Forgotten," for me, it would be flat-out jealousy. Sure, other threads are being pulled, as I mentioned above, but I found the key sticking point to be jealous, obsessive behavior. Some may argue that I've missed the point of Stock's story but honestly? I don't think I did - but who is to say for sure, as everyone's thought processes work a little differently. Yes, you could also say this is a coming-of-age tale of sorts or even a study of sexual identity, but no matter the path you catch a ride on - it always comes back to jealousy. For me, that's fine because it's an incredible emotion to use as a backbone for a story - especially a short film. It's something that can be related to no matter your sexual orientation, and it makes "Ecstasy Behind the Forgotten" an incredibly effective short film.
When it's all said and done, a few things are immediately clear about this film. "Ecstasy Behind the Forgotten" is an excellently acted production with some great writing and directing pushing forward the narrative. It looks great, sounds great, and is, frankly, so much better than I could have hoped. I purposefully tried to keep things as spoiler-free as possible for one reason - so that you, the reader, will tune in yourself when this film becomes available. You'll be glad you did. |
