Isla is pretty behind on bills, so it’s about time she looked into how she might be able to pay them. While she’s been doing her best to pick up a shift here and there in between classes, young Isla is facing a problem that so many folks face out there these days. Trying to figure out some kind of work/life balance while also still generating a decent enough income to battle the growing problem of economic inequality. As you probably know, that’s not nearly as easy as it used to be. As you are also probably aware, one of the modern-day solutions has been online content creation. Isla’s friend Fay is making about two grand a week part-time at this point in her ForeFans career, where she confesses, “there’s not much I haven’t done,” on camera, but her carefree attitude and lifestyle make it all seem enticing. Isla is definitely a lot less outgoing and a lot more shy, but Fay is more than willing to show her the ropes and get her friend started on a new career in online content creation. Isla is subtly gorgeous & obviously attractive, so by putting herself out there on the internet, she’s sure to be rolling in the money very soon.

The question becomes, how much of a person’s self SHOULD they put out there into the online realm? The answer, of course, is not an ounce more than you’re comfortable with – but the reality of achieving that might not nearly be as simple as it sounds. You can see the subtle pressures from Fay and photographer Tomislav encouraging Isla to get naked. You can see Isla’s boyfriend, Noah, reducing her new potential career to the equivalent of modern-day prostitution. You can also see that Isla’s own curiosity is quickly getting the best of her as well. She wants the independence and freedom that would come from having extra money, of course, but you can see she’s excited by the liberation that could also come with the life of a cam-girl as well. From innocent photos to earning her first tips online, it doesn’t take long before we can see how fast this could all spiral right outta control, but you also see how it’s not quite as easy as many people would assume it is, either. It’s not merely a matter of jumping in front of a camera – you’ve gotta have that same flair and passion for the craft that Fay does, and that’s a totally different matter altogether. No different than how some actors have the ‘it’ factor and some don’t, Isla is learning that just her nipples alone aren’t going to pay the bills – visible personality onscreen is as much of a crucial element. Hours spent onscreen waiting for someone to enter the chat is also a factor, in addition to dealing with the typical creeps & freeloaders that are simply trying to get a peek for free.

“ForeFans” becomes pretty graphic, explicit, and somewhat exploitative in some ways, but as extreme as it is, you also get an important glimpse at something much deeper than staring at another beautiful rack on a gorgeous girl. We get a look at what it’s really like on the other side of the screen as Isla tries her best to navigate this new world online, and how fast it becomes a battle against the incessant depravity of men and the user base of a site like “Forefans.” At their best and most well-behaved, they are respectful and complimentary…but at their worst, they make comments that should practically get them thrown in jail. As with all things that tend to take place online in conversation, there is no filter and no accountability…you’ll see it doesn’t take long at all for abusive comments to come Isla’s way, and that if she’s going to really find some level of success in this online industry, she’ll have to weather a full storm of attention that’s both wanted and unwanted, yet impossible separate. Is it tough to watch a film like “ForeFans,” you ask? I am not made of stone, my friends – this had my eyes open as wide as I could get them, and I could only imagine that most people tuning in would certainly feel the same way.

It’s wild how many people will specifically ask for a cam-girl’s location, but I’m not all that surprised by that either. Men are particularly creepy in that respect, and equally delusional at the very same time. You’ll see Isla struggle to maintain her boundaries along the way and how difficult it would be to do that. Isla starts really bringing in the coin, though, which even forces her crabby roommate Ana to get off her back about paying the bills. Eventually, she meets a dude named Jonas online and starts to share time outside of the “ForeFans” site that was able to protect her, setting off just about every red flag a person could ever think of. The naivety of Isla is on display at every moment as she takes this journey towards her own personal empowerment, which shows just how difficult it is to maintain the balance required to separate her new working world from what’s happening in the online realm. When Jonas eventually asks for Isla’s address to ship her something he bought for her, those red flags become bright flashing warning signs that our story’s protagonist is so far over her head that she’s now in real danger. “ForeFans” shows us that online fantasy can quickly translate into some extreme problems in real life.

The spiral continues. Isla starts to experience problems in her relationship with Noah. She starts to drink heavily. She’s clearly emotionally overwhelmed, but at the same time, she’s making considerable money, and that’s incredibly hard to give up when you haven’t experienced that before. At the same time, she’s becoming much more confident as a person and as an entertainer, but with great power comes great responsibility, as they say. As hot as Isla makes each and every one of her scenes, you can’t help but simultaneously feel like one of the creeps who has jumped into the chat to look for free. All this is happening, and we know the threat of Jonas is still lurking right around the corner somewhere.

So…what’s the verdict here? How should we feel about “ForeFans” and how is it even possible to assess this film objectively with so much eye candy onscreen? Credit to Writer/Director Ivan Malekin, who makes sure that the social commentary remains a large part of this film, and that he is also able to find clever ways to highlight the enormous potential for danger to reach right through the screen. Anastasia Kor (Isla) puts on a wildly daring, exceptional performance that shows her blossom from an innocent girl lacking self-confidence into the boss of her own online career. Andrea Veguez (Fay) is equally commendable as the friend who has been there and done it all. Nicolas Hackenberg (Jonas) is also exceptional in showing us how real danger presents itself in subtle, unassuming ways. Is there an argument to be made that “ForeFans” is essentially a modern form of softcore porn? I think if you were just passing by the screen and didn’t know the full story, it could possibly be mistaken for that, but for those really paying close attention, you’ll see that Ivan is attempting to show us something more involved & complex with how this movie blurs the lines between what we need & what we’ll do to get it.

There are days when this job can be tougher than you might think, but today is not one of those days. It is really damn easy to watch “ForeFans” from start to finish…maybe too easy…and maybe that’s the real point beyond anything else. Who wouldn’t want to have a thinner line separate our fantasies from the reality in which we live? “ForeFans” is intentionally provocative, thought-provoking, and there’s much more to it than viewing just another bunch of hot cam-girls. It’s about preserving the boundaries we consider important, it’s about finding the confidence to say no every bit as much as it’s about finding a way to say yes, and it’s about our limitations as human beings in a variety of ways. I really like what Malekin has put together here, and I’m going with a strong three and a half out of five overall – if based on performances alone, perhaps even a straight-up four. “ForeFans” is a bold reminder that online or offline, danger is capable of revealing itself at any time.
