Do you think Covid-19 is terrible? Wait until you witness the devastation of Covid-21 - it makes C-19 look like a bed of roses, or so we're told. "Hell in a Handbasket" is an indie pandemic film that, although dark in nature, also offers a slightly comical take on what Lee Chambers envisions as the end of the world. This film takes place within some far-out research outpost that, like the current vaccine we're using for Covid-19, is extremely cold. I kept waiting for a shape-shifting alien to come out of one of the test tubes. That, obviously, never happened.
What happened was a fun little film featuring Dale, a bumbling scientist who is not having a very good day. Things quickly escalate, and his bad day becomes much, much worse. The New York and Rome facilities have just gone offline, and all the life-saving research has gone with them. What's left? Dale's deep cold lab - just read the words on the film's poster, and you'll get an idea of what's going on. How does it all end? You'll simply have to watch to find out - but considering this film clocks in at under six minutes, that shouldn't be a problem. You won't mistake this short flick for a Hollywood blockbuster, but without question, "Hell in a Handbasket" is what I describe as low-budget done right. There's just enough "cool" to keep things visually interesting, and Dale himself keeps things fresh. Now, reader, if you dig too much into the film's plot, you may wonder how someone like Dale could ever have been recruited in the first place. But what fun would that be? It "feels" like Chambers wanted to create a movie that would be relatable due to our ever-changing pandemic world but also keep things on the lighter side. He succeeded. No question.
So there you have it. "Hell in a Handbasket" was a darkly fun and very fast hit of much-needed entertainment. Frankly? I'm actually surprised so much was crammed into such a short film without it feeling bloated - and yet here it is. This is a flick that will especially appeal to those with some dark humor hiding deep within themselves. My personal opinion? An easy three and a half stars. |
