Declan (Danny Chase) is a sleazy restaurant owner who sees an opportunity to score some quick cash that will save his struggling business after a recent health inspection. While passing around the blame for his recent troubles and firing employees (without notice), he learns that a famous musician Beatrice (Elouise Warboys), is in the restaurant with a violin of particular value. He aims to swindle a deal to buy the violin from Beatrice for three-thousand pounds and then sell it to a pair of instrument collectors for ten thousand. That essentially makes the bulk of the plot for this quick little film - and there's nothing wrong with that.
Let me just write that "I Will Make It Worth Your While" is an easy watch at twelve minutes - as the editing keeps the plot moving along with a snappy suspenseful, and, yes, reader, comedic build-up. I should also add that this short film has some good performances across the board. I was constantly engaged. However, one thing that quickly stood out as a bit bothersome was the constant use of close-ups. Overuse. Yes - it can put us right in the characters' space and provide an added layer of tension... but the technique feels a little overdone here, especially when characters start dipping in and out of focus. Anything can be great when used in the right amounts but once you begin overdoing it, things can get dicey.
At the end of the day, "I Will Make It Worth Your While" has and uses a great location that easily elevates the low-budget production and provides an edgy backdrop. Props to the creators, writer, director Damien Fowler, and the crew. Their passion and enthusiasm for the material feel very genuine - it comes across nicely during the finished project. Although only a little over ten minutes in length - I have no problem awarding "I Will Make It Worth Your While" a solid three stars. |
