Web Series Review

3/5
Anyone remember Seinfeld? The show about nothing? In many ways, "Killing It!" is a lot like that. Sure. There is a loose background story. One of making it big in the film industry, for Mares, one of the two protagonists of the series. The reality however, is a little different. A good chunk of the episodes have nothing at all to do with "the industry" at all. Hell, most of the episodes have nothing to do with anything really. With episodes that consist of a song, a montage, or even a small story about the lottery... "Killing It!" is all over the place story-wise, and also nowhere at all. I don't write this as a complaint in any way. I actually enjoyed the scatter-brained episodes that showcase our scatter-brained stars completely. Mares and Kaps are simply our guides into a silly world of ridiculousness. In today's sea of independent web series that take themselves completely seriously - even the comedies, it's refreshing to see a series that simply tries to have some fun. A overly complicated story is not always needed. Sometimes it's about the characters themselves that make a good show, as Mares and Kaps demonstrate. So what did I take away after binge watching all nine episodes? Well reader... I did laugh quite a bit. I also happened to groan a time or three. Yet in the end, I recognized this show for what it was. A show about friends. Friends, friendships, dreams and just hanging out. Sprinkle in a few deeper references, to how ones life never turns out the way you want or hope, and then back to the friendship angle again. "Killing It" reminded me that being silly with a friend has never actually went out of style. Even when we grow up and tend to be all serious and normal, it remains waiting - just below the surface. Waiting for us to shed our preconceived notions of adulthood and just let go. The zany fun translates well to the small screen, and the episodes just flew by. As I wrote above, sometimes you don't need a complicated story to make a decent series. Sometimes... you just need to let go and have some fun.
I'm not going to go into a huge rant on the technicalities of this show. It's totally watchable and better than a lot of micro series I have watched lately. Mares and Kaps, played by Marianne Bayard and Jonathan Kaplan, have a chemistry that completely fits these unusual characters they've created. Through quick editing and a genuine feeling of friendship, these two just work. Toopy and Binoo, Ren and Stimpy... Robocop and ED209... these are all friends (except Robocop and ED) that tend to compliment and contrast one and other. Mares and Kaps do just that, and together they really "are" the show. Above, I may have complimented the lack of real mini-stories for each episode, but it's a double edged sword. I would have liked to have seen more little scenarios at work. The lottery episode was a good run, story-wise, for it's few minutes of air time. I also didn't like how the season ended, with no reference at all to the main plot of the show. Mares dreams of becoming an actress. Something... anything... would have worked much better than nothing at all. Maybe, if a second season is being written... some attention to a few mini stories, or episodic problems/solutions could be written in. I feel it would take this show to a much higher level.
When it's all over, and the BFF's sing, I can't deny the fun I had as I pushed through the show, episode by episode. Be it the funny face episode, or the sleep over episode - complete with a massive montage... "Killing It!" was just fun to watch - in that same way we all secretly still laugh at fart jokes. I have high hopes that should another season appear, these two friends are literally going to kill it! All the pieces are present. The chemistry. The jokes... there really is no reason for this show not to simply get better and better. So reader, when you're feeling a little blue... turn that frown upside down! "Killing It!" is waiting for you! Did I mention it's a web series that is free? Definitely worth a visit and funny in a very lighthearted way. A solid three stars... and counting...
