This was one of those titles that I was unsure about. With an interesting premise and a funny name I was hoping for the best, but not expecting a lot. I was in for a surprise because Schlock Fish was done very well. Making things all the better was the fact it was actually quite funny! Always so happy when a title far exceeds expectations.
In terms of story and pacing, writer / director Esteban Uribe does a fantastic job! The other aspect of this cool film is that it's shot very well for a short, Indie flick. Clear and well lit images; with a real eye for composing a shot really take this title to a higher level, and raise the Indie bar high into the air. A few shots stand out, but the one that kept me wondering was a shot featuring the lead fishing; surrounded by a huge amount of fog. Did cinematographer Lukasz Pruchnik wait and wait for the fog to roll in? Or was it just one of those lucky things. Either way this was one of my favorites. Some natural beauty coexisting with comedy. How cool is that? The actual editing of the short was done by a seemingly experienced hand (Esteban Uribe) and Schlock Fish plays through in a very polished way. Do you ever find your ears hurt after listening to the audio of a lot of Indie flicks? Not here. We have a great sound mix and although mostly narrated; Schlock Fish comes through loud and clear. A special note should be made of actor Kris Swinnen. Man... he did a great job. From the general expressions to the outright funny motions he infuses into his part... pure comedy gold of the classic style. Here we have a title that is both well done and very funny. Schlock Fish is one of those shorts you find yourself showing to your friends or maybe looking for on some random Cable network. IT really plays that well! What's the best part you ask? It's free to watch! -MC Other Reviews That May Interest You
