Symmetropia
Feature Film Review Maybe I'm being a little generous with my rating of "Symmetropia" from Zachary Davis. Or, maybe I'm not. The truth is that I really, really enjoyed this incredibly quick short film. When it comes down to it, it's how I feel and if I think this title should be given a four and a half stars... that's exactly what I'm going to do. The question comes down to what you'll think after watching this quickie? I think you will probably agree with me. It's all here. Excellent production work, a talented cast, some dark comedy and yes ladies and gents, an interesting idea. That's not to say it's an entirely unique idea, but it's executed in a way that makes it feel unique.
In a quick, spoiler free nut-shell, Joey has a fear of symmetry. A bad one by the sounds of things. In an effort to cure him of this ailment, his doctor has devised an interesting treatment. A trip to the woods, so to speak. It's from here things get a little interesting, or quite interesting depending on how much about this title you already know. Essentially, if you remove the mid-credits segment, this short film only runs about four and a half minutes. So I really can't say much more on the plot, without giving away the surprise. Let me just write that it doesn't disappoint. It's funny, it's unexpected and it's oddly satisfying. In a morbid sort of way. Was I expecting the strange turn of events that played out before my eyes? Not at all. Technically, this is an excellent and polished looking production. No surprise considering how short it is. The quicker the flick, the more resources that can be used within the short length. It's still worth mentioning however, the excellent coloring choices and shoot location. The opening wide shots and natural "symmetrical" beauty of this location were a perfect way to start things off. Right from the get-go I knew this would end up being a visually pleasant film. As luck would have it, the audio was also top notch, as was the video edit itself. Editors are the unsung hero of film. When they do their job, you can't even tell they were part of the production. This "is" the case here. Need I write more? The two leads, Andrew Robinson and Joseph Piacentini do a great job in their roles. Both as the afflicted and as the awkward, creepy shrink. Again, I can't really say much more than that for fear of spoilers. Safe to say a virtual thumbs up will have to do. As for the story itself? It did the trick. The set-up was perfect and the ending was well... I'm sure you get the idea. "Symmetropia" is one of those really quick fix films we all need from time to time. Done well, funny and just really fast. A slight boost when you're feeling down. The goal is to entertain and this title easily scores. Even better? It's another freebie to watch. So why not do yourself a solid and have a look.
