The ABCs of Death. Where to start. Well, first off, I love horror and gore and everything in between. Meaning that my review is more tainted by personal taste than usual. But I will write one truth. You're either going to love it or completely hate it. There's not really any middle ground with this one. When you jam 26 mini movies from 26 directors the results can be a little off the wall... Ok, maybe a lot off the wall.
In case you haven't figured it out yet, this film showcases 26 ways to die via the letters of the alphabet. The results, for me at least were very entertaining. ABCs has everything you can imagine! Plots ranging from end of the world scenarios, to farting. Every kind of production quality. Animation, low end, high end and even stop motion animation with clay! If you can think it, it's probably mixed somewhere in this film.
So. Ya. I really liked it. The no holds barred approach to horror and gore. But, if you sicken easily, or are easily offended than stay away from this flick! Even for myself, a genre lover, I was caught feeling a little uneasy at times, to say the least.
You'll read a lot of bad reviews, and some bad comments about The ABCs of Death, but as long as you know what you're getting into, there's a good chance you'll really love it like I did. It is what it is and doesn't try to sugarcoat anything! Or apologize either. The main thing to consider if you're debating watching this film is that it doesn't try and scare you, so to speak. It's more like a shock fest. Still though, you gotta love the balls of the producers for bringing this to us. And I'm glad they had them.
As I stated above, the production quality of this film varies since it's an anthology. The good, the bad and the corny/cheesy are all here. So I'm going to leave the technical part of the review out this time round. But there are some good little pieces mixed in with the not so good ones. Even if you think ABCs is a heaping dung pile, the few really good sketches are really good and well worth the watch.
All in all, this is a great flick if you're into this kind of stuff. Nothing wrong with a little bit of Twisted to round off a normal life. My personal fav's? The letter "D" for it's great ending, and the letter "T" for... Go find out for yourself! The ABCs Of Death is available for purchase or digital download. I think it's even on Netflix now. Being a lover of the Genre, I humbly submit my score of 3.5 / 5.0.
