Warning. Some spoilers ahead.
"Vax" is a short teaser of sorts, and it's right up my alley. It's all set during George W. Bush's presidency in 2003 when the news was focused on government spending, tax cuts, and support from the UN - which will enable W's war in Iraq. Now, I thought that this film might dive into 9/11 territory - until the news reports on the outbreak of Malaria, which is killing a lot of people each year—mostly young children. The work for a vaccine is urgent, and this film shifts to Triple Hills Pharma laboratory, where two guys are studying some samples. They are working on a vaccine. Now I'm certainly no scientist, but something is amiss with one of the samples. Here's where I became a little bit confused, but I feel there's a darker force at work here. It seems that they have discovered a cure for Malaria, but for some reason, they are not celebrating. One of the men returns home to his wife with this news, but there are no smiles. No congratulations. There's also the question of who will get the credit for this breakthrough. The man decides to return to work - back at the lab, the head guy is on the phone with someone in the higher echelons, it seems. This discovery is to remain confidential, and by the way this call ends, it seems that something is definitely happening - and not in a good way. When our main protagonist returns to the lab, he finds his boss already messing around with the sample. It appears he's destroying it. The boss asks his colleague if he has told anyone. Hmmm. His wife back at home knows. Perhaps it wasn't a wise idea to tell her.
If I were to guess what's going on here, I would think that it has something to do with big pharma and all the money that a global vaccine can bring or costs. Years of trials and FDA approval seem to be a big concern. Now, this is a very short piece of a larger story. I'm hoping to see the rest - and soon! I truly believe that "Vax" can be a powerful feature film. Writer/Director Barak Shpiez has a great talent for filmmaking - that's for sure. All three actors, Cade Carradine, Ricco Ross, Marguerite Wheatley, and the narrator TK Telman give powerful and convincing performances. The sets are perfect, and so is the overall production. "Vax" really feels much, much bigger than it probably is. I want more, and if that's not a great compliment - I don't know what is. In my humble opinion, "Vax" earns a stellar four and a half stars out of five. Well done. |
